Finding Balance: 7 Ways to Make Time for Yourself in a Busy Mom Life

As a mom you have a million responsibilities—kids, household, work or other commitments. But in the midst of all the chaos, remember taking time for yourself is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. “Me time” allows you to recharge, get perspective and be at your best for those who depend on you. So how do busy moms find the balance between caring for others and making time for themselves? Here are 7 ways to make time for that essential “me time.”

1. Take Advantage of Early Mornings or Late Nights

Sometimes the best way to find peace is to catch those quiet hours before the house wakes up or after everyone has gone to bed. Whether it’s an early morning cup of coffee, a workout or a few chapters of a good book, these quiet moments can set you up for a more centered day or help you unwind after a busy one.

Tip: Try waking up 15-30 minutes earlier than usual or going to bed 15-30 minutes later than usual to do something you enjoy—something just for you.

2. Make ‘Me Time’ an Appointment

If you don’t schedule it, “me time” can get pushed aside. Instead treat it like a non-negotiable appointment. Block out specific times on your calendar for self-care—whether it’s a solo walk, a yoga class or just sitting quietly with your thoughts.

Tip: Choose a specific time of the week or day and put it on your calendar as “Me Time” so it’s non-negotiable.

3. Use Nap Time or Independent Play

If your children nap or have independent playtime, use that time for yourself. Don’t use it to tackle chores or get work done. Instead use it to do things that fill you up—meditating, reading or just resting.

Tip: If your child has outgrown nap time, encourage independent play. Set them up with toys, puzzles or activities that give you a window of uninterrupted time.

4. Learn to Delegate and Ask for Help

One of the hardest things for many moms to do is to ask for help but delegating tasks to your partner, older children or a trusted family member can give you time. You don’t have to do it all—let others help and you’ll have space to breathe.

Tip: Start small—delegate one task a day, whether it’s asking someone else to do dinner or having your partner do bedtime so you can unwind.

5. Do Two Things at Once with ‘Me Time’

If your schedule is too full to fit in extra time for yourself, try combining activities. For example, listen to a podcast while driving or running errands. Or if you’re waiting at a sports practice, sit and reflect, journal or have a cup of tea.

Tip: Do activities you enjoy while doing routine tasks makes the task more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Setting Boundaries

6. Set Boundaries with Your Time

Learning to say no is one of the most powerful things you can do. Whether it’s declining an extra work project or limiting your involvement in community activities, setting boundaries protects your time and energy. This doesn’t mean you’re shirking your responsibilities—it means you’re taking care of yourself.

Tip: Practice saying no without guilt. Start small, like saying no to an extra commitment when you know it will stretch you too thin.

Mindfullness mother

7. Take Mindful Moments Throughout the Day

You don’t need a big chunk of time to recharge—sometimes small mindful moments are enough to reset. Take a few deep breaths, step outside for some fresh air or do a quick meditation to centre yourself during the crazy parts of the day.

Tip: When you feel overwhelmed, take 1-2 minutes to breathe deeply, let your body and mind relax and then get back to your tasks.
